Alexandria Accommodation
Alexandria, Loch Lomond
The central township of the five original settlements of Alexandria, Balloch, Bonhill, Jamestown and Renton which extend along both sides of the River Leven.
The river's swiftly flowing water has been responsible in times past for the industry and prosperity of the "Vale of Leven".
Bonhill was the original parish and the present church was built in 1836 by John Baird in the Gothic style. At a time when churches are declining Bonhill is quite unique as its often full on a Sunday morning. The graveyard contains some striking mausoleums within it. Among these is the grave of one Robert Nairn, the village shoemaker who died in 1685. He was a covenanter who was chased from his home and forced to live rough in the hill above Bonhill. His crime was that he opposed the form of religious government that was being forced upon the Church of Scotland. A harsh winter took its toll and Robert died for his faith.
The Fountain was built in 1870 on the site of an old Oak tree which used to dominate the town. The tree was cut down in 1865 with much public protest. The tree had been used as a focal point over the years for public orators, preachers and strolling players. The fountain was dedicated to Alexander Smollet MP for Dunbartonshire. The monument is of French Gothic style with grey and red granite from Aberdeen and was built by William Baras a local builder.
Christie Park was gifted to the town by Mr John Christie chairman and managing director of the United Turkey Red company. The site of the Turkey Red company is under development and will become Lomond Shores in April 2001. The park is 14 acres and was opened in 1902. The cenotaph and gardens provide a pleasant interlude before or after a visit to Loch Lomond Factory Outlets.
Antartex Village is home to various craft shops. Tourists can find Scottish goods in abundance and hand made gifts from speciality retailers.
