Dumbarton, Loch Lomond

Dumbarton is dominated by Dumbarton Rock. It means the "Fortress of the Britons". From at least the fifth century AD until 1034 Dumbarton Rock was the centre of the independent British Kingdom of Strathclyde.

Historic interest includes Old Dumbarton Bridge built 1765, St Augustine's Church built 1872 designed by Sir Robert Rowand and Charles Rennie Mackintosh was married in this church. The Old Parish Church is the oldest church in Dumbarton and was built in 1811 and there has been a church on this site since the l4th century. Because of the threat of body snatching members of the community in 1830 would stand watch in the graveyard from dusk till dawn.

Leisure activities for the tourist includes the Meadow Centre offering swimming, gym, badminton, etc and also has a cafeteria and bar. The Denny Civic Theatre provides a venue for local amateur dramatic groups to display their talents. Of course Dumbarton is only 15 minutes along the A82 from Loch Lomond and the myriad of activities offered by the area.
